謝子龍影像藝術館“中國攝影研究與出版資助計劃”(2023-2024)
謝子龍影像藝術館位于長沙市洋湖濕地公園,由謝子龍先生出資創建,為清水混凝土建筑,建筑面積10600平方米,是目前國內最大的公益影像藝術館。自2017年9月16日起對公眾開放,5年以來共舉辦館藏展覽、國內與國際現當代攝影及當代藝術展覽等類型展覽66個,公共教育活動數百場,至今已有近300萬公眾到訪。謝子龍影像藝術館集收藏、研究、展覽和公共教育四大職能板塊為一體,積極推動機構交流和學術研究,搭建影像藝術公共服務平臺。
謝子龍影像藝術館藏有萬余件影像原作。以中國晚清、民國的歷史影像收藏為核心,藏有費利斯·比托、威廉·桑德斯、唐納德·曼尼、約瑟夫·洛克等西方攝影師作品,華芳照相館、雅真照相館、裕勛齡和郎靜山等中國照相館或攝影師作品。藏品中包含達蓋爾、錫板、蛋白印相、立體照片、玻璃底片、銀鹽等多種材質及形式,立體觀片器、幻燈箱、電影放映機及膠卷等影像器具,以及部分當代影像藝術家作品及影像圖書千余本。
依托于豐富的攝影原作收藏系統,謝子龍影像藝術館實現了全部館藏影像電子化并建設有“中國歷史影像在線”網站(www.xfotos.cn)。同時,針對館藏影像進行基礎研究,每月原創“云館藏”系列科普文章向公眾推廣;每年以深度研究支持每年館藏展覽策展,目前已有《初見——費利斯·比托1860年之中國影像》、《當歷史回歸彩色——謝子龍影像藝術館藏歷史影像展》、《初見:費利斯·比托,世界最早的東亞影像記錄》(2019年)、《觀看之道:今日攝影中的歷史映像》、《影像時刻:早期中國攝影視覺的發生》5個館藏展覽,并出版展覽同名畫冊。

以開放式的研究激活影像藏品能量,聚焦中國攝影史論及視覺文化,驅動中國攝影史相關研究發展,鼓勵中外影像研究譯介,提供攝影研究和討論的新平臺,謝子龍影像藝術館“中國攝影研究與出版資助計劃”中國攝影史研究資助計劃”面向國內外研究者發出邀請,提供研究駐留機會及相關經費支持,以影像原作為學術引力,形成持續涌動的研究場域。

研究類型
Types of Research
該計劃接受以下三種研究類型申請
A.中國早期攝影藏品研究(含駐地)
以XPM早期攝影收藏為核心,獲選研究者可在XPM進行為期7-14天的駐地研究。其中分為材料熟悉和團隊交流兩個階段。獲選研究者將根據個人研究方向及XPM館藏制定相關研究計劃,在XPM觀片室進行原件觀片,并通過線上數據庫閱覽、檢索及研究館藏,使用圖書文獻中心相關資料,與XPM學術團隊交流討論,最終形成研究成果。
B.書稿或博士論文研究與出版(含駐地)
以申請者相關書稿或博士論文為核心,XPM早期攝影收藏為輔助材料,獲選研究者可在XPM進行為期7-14天的駐地研究并獲得出版經費支持。
C.外文譯著出版(不含駐地)
支持有關攝影理論及視覺文化研究的外文譯著翻譯計劃,為譯著出版提供經費支持。

2023年度共支持3位研究者,獲選研究者每人將得到(稅后)30,000元人民幣的研究資助金。同時,A、B兩種類型研究者往來長沙的交通食宿費用,由XPM負責。

申請評選
Application Selection
申請將經過兩輪評審:初評和學術委員會評審。申請者通過XPM團隊初審后,提報XPM學術委員會會議進行審議,最后確定獲選研究者。

1.申請者(無年齡或國籍限制)請提交以下材料:
①研究提案或書稿概述,字數限制在中文2000字以內;
②個人履歷,包括學歷、工作經歷、項目經歷、獎項、榮譽及出版物等;
③一封學術或行業推薦信。
④申請C類型的研究者,需額外提供在提交日期前已簽訂的出版社合同或同類型證明材料。
2.通過初審的申請者將獲邀進行線上面試;
3.2023-2024年度申請結果擬于2023年9月公布。

研究成果
Research Outputs
1.申請A類型的研究者須完成?篇中?字數不少于8000字或英?不少于5000字的研究論?,并與XPM合作,在研究計劃完成后的2年內,公開發表于相關攝影研究期刊或出版物;申請B、C類型的研究者,書稿或譯著須在研究計劃完成后的2年內,公開發表于相關攝影研究期刊、出版物或獨立成書出版。
2.駐留XPM期間舉辦?場與研究申請主題的公開講座(地點:謝子龍影像藝術館多功能廳,或根據實際情況改為線上);
3.根據需要,研究者可以提交?份與研究計劃對應的作品收藏計劃或策展?案。XPM評估后納?未來?作計劃。
有關研究成果須在出版時注明“該研究受到謝子龍影像藝術館中國攝影研究與出版資助計劃支持”。

Open Call
Xie Zilong Photography Museum(XPM)is located at Yanghu Wetland Park in Changsha City,and it was founded by Mr.Xie Zilong.Covering an area of 10,600 square meters,the venue of XPM is a building of fair-faced concrete.Currently,XPM is the largest public welfare photography museum in China.Officially opened to the public since September 16th,2017,XPM has held 66 exhibitions including collection exhibitions,domestic and international exhibitions of contemporary photography and contemporary art,and hundreds of public education activities over the past five years,attracting more than three million visitors so far.XPM has four functional parts of collection,research,exhibition and public education,which actively promotes art exchange and academic research in order to build up a public service platform for image art.
XPM has a collection of over 10,000 original images.With the historical image collection of China's late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China as the focus,the collections include works by Western photographers such as Felice Beato,William Saunders,Donald Mennie and Joseph Francis Charles Rock,as well as works of Chinese photo studios and photographers such as AFong Photo Studio,AChan Photo Studio,Yu Xunling and Lang Jingshan,etc.The collection includes a variety of materials and forms such as daguerreotype,tintype,albumen prints,stereo photos,glass negatives,silver salt,etc.,and photographic equipment such as stereo viewers,film boxes,film projectors and film,as well as works by some contemporary video artists and over a thousand video books.
XPM has realized complete digitalization of the collected works thanks to its comprehensive collection system of original photographic works,and launched a website“Chinese Historical Images Online”(www.xfotos.cn).In the meantime,XPM has carried out fundamental research on its collections,provided a series of articles of XPM’s Collection for the publicity of public platforms,and assisted its annual collection exhibitions with in-depth research.By now,XPM has launched 5 exhibitions of its collections:First Seen:the Earliest Photo Album of Peking by Felice Beato,The History Mirrored in Colors—XPM's Collection of Historic Photographs,First Seen:Felice Beato,The Earliest Photo Record of East Asia,Ways of Seeing:The Reflection of History in Contemporary Photography,Photographic Moments:the Emergence of Photographic Visuality in China,and has publish the catalogues of the same titles of the above exhibitions.
To activate the energy of the image collections through open research,to focus on the history and theory of Chinese photography and visual culture,to drive the development of research related to the history of Chinese photography,to encourage the translation of research on images of China and foreign countries,and to provide a new platform for photographic research and discussion,XPM Fellowship for Chinese Photography Research and Publication invites researchers from home and abroad and provides opportunities for research residency as well as related financial support,applying the original works of image as an academic driving force to form an ever-lasting dynamic research fields.
The deadline for application for the XPM Fellowship for Chinese Photography Research and Publication(2023-2024)is June 16.2023.
I.Types of Research(This fellowship accepts applications for the following three types of research):
A.Research on the collections of early Chinese photography(research residency included)
Taking XPM’s collections of early photography as the core,selected researchers are allowed to conduct a 7-14-day research residency at XPM.There are two stages during the residency:material accumulation and group exchange.The selected researcher shall develop a research plan based on individual research direction in connection with the collections of XPM.The researcher shall view the original copies of the images in the viewing room of XPM,read,search and study the collections through online databases,use relevant materials in the Center for Books and Archives,and exchange as well as discuss with XPM’s academic team to finalize research outputs.
B.Book manuscript or the research and publication of doctoral dissertation(research residency included)
Taking relevant book manuscripts or doctoral dissertations of applicants as the core,and XPM’s collections of early photography as supplementary materials,selected researchers are allowed to conduct a 7-14-day research residency at XPM as well as receive financial support for their publications.
C.Publication of translated books in foreign languages(research residency not included)
Translation program of books in foreign languages focusing on theory of photography and the study of visual culture will be supported and corresponding financial support for the publications will be provided.
II.Research Funding:
A total of three researchers will be supported in 2023,and the selected researchers will each receive(after tax)a research grant of 30,000 RMB.XPM will be responsible for the costs of transportation to and from Changsha as well as costs of accommodation for the researchers belonging to type A and B.
III.Application Selection:
Applications will go through two rounds of evaluation:preliminary evaluation and evaluation by the academic committee.After passing the preliminary evaluation by the XPM team,applicants will be submitted to the panel meeting of XPM Academic Committee for consideration,and the selected researcher will be finalized.

IV.Application Submission:
1.Applicants(no age or nationality restrictions)should submit the following materials:
①Research proposal or outline of book manuscript,with a word limit of 2000 in Chinese words or less.
②Biographical information,including academic qualifications,work experience,project experience,awards,honors and publications.
③An academic or professional recommendation letter.
④Researcher applying for type C should additionally provide a contract for publication or equivalent supporting documents that have been signed prior to the submission date.
2.Applicants who pass the preliminary evaluation will be invited to take an online interview.
3.The results of the 2023 application are to be announced in September 2023.
V.Research Outputs:
Outputs of research program include the following.
1.Researcher applying for type A should complete a piece of research paper of at least 8,000 words in Chinese or 5,000 words in English,which is expected to be published in a relevant journal or publication of photographic research in collaboration with XPM within 2 years after the completion of the research program;researchers applying for type B and type C should publish the book manuscript or translated in a relevant journal or publication of photographic research or publish it as an independent book within 2 years after the completion of the research program.
2.Giving a public lecture on the theme of the research application during the residency at XPM(venue:Multi-functional Hall of XPM or online according to actual situation).
3.The researcher may submit a collection plan or curatorial proposal corresponding to the research project,which will be evaluated by XPM and included in the future work plan.
If the research outputs will be published,the statement“This research is supported by XPM Fellowship for Chinese Photography Research and Publication”shall be indicated.
VI.Submission Period
The application deadline for 2023 is June 16,2023.
